Toyota Celica Accelerator Cable
The Accelerator Cable of the Toyota Celica transforms pressure from the driver's foot into a corresponding movement at the throttle, allowing the engine to suck in the right amount of air and fuel. The Accelerator Cable runs from the pedal to the throttle plate. When you push on the accelerator pedal, the Accelerator Cable pulls the throttle plate open. This allows more air to flow through the venturi. As a result of the extra airflow, vacuum draws out more fuel from the float bowl. This extra fuel gets mixed in with the airstream. The mixture returns to cruise settings after the foot eases off the plate. The Accelerator Cable on early Celica models, with its one, two, or four barrel carburetors, triggered an accelerator pump which provided a quick squirt of petrol at the behest of sudden acceleration. As emissions rules drove Toyota to the electronic fuel injection route during the late 1970s, the same basic Accelerator Cable continued to operate a throttle body rather than a carburetor, but the pull length and end fittings were changed to suit the new hardware. In the OEM Celica vehicles of the years covered by the research, no drive-by-wire units were employed. Thus, every Accelerator Cable remained a simple steel wire in a lubricated sheath.
