Toyota Echo Wheel Hub

The Wheel Hub of the Toyota Echo is responsible for securing the wheel on the Toyota Echo and allowing it to rotate via the bearings built into the hub. The Wheel Hub assembly connects the rim to the vehicle and the attached suspension system. It contains internal bearings and sensors. The assembly also provides the brake disc or drum with a mounting point. The body, secured with bolts and studs, assists steering control and safety on Toyota models such as the Echo. There are three basic configurations. A sealed unit combines the hub, bearing, and usually an ABS sensor into one non-serviceable part. A press-apart unit is applied on certain front-wheel-drive setups, where the hub and bearing are separate but must be pressed apart using special equipment. A non-driven axle configuration uses opposed, replaceable tapered roller bearings. Toyota automobile Wheel Hub types have the same functionality but differ in service application and layout of bearing. A correctly torqued Wheel Hub keeps it secured in place. Choosing a Wheel Hub with the correct bolt pattern, flange range, and axle extension ensures proper fitment on any Toyota Echo vehicle, keeping the Echo stable and responsive.

Toyota Echo Wheel Hub Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should the rear Wheel Bearing and Wheel Hub be inspected, removed, and refitted on Toyota Echo?
    A:
The rear hub and bearing are a sealed unit, and if the rear bearings are worn, a new hub must be fitted. On models with ABS, the rear wheel sensor is attached to the hub and can be removed and fitted to the new unit, although this task is best handled by a Toyota dealer. The rear hub bearings are non-adjustable. To check for excessive wear, chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the vehicle, and support it on axle stands while fully releasing the handbrake. Grip the rear wheel at the top and bottom and attempt to rock it; excessive movement or roughness when spinning the wheel indicates worn hub bearings. To remove the hub, loosen the rear wheel nuts, chock the front wheels, jack up the rear, and support it on axle stands before removing the rear wheel. After removing the brake drum, inspect the rear brake components and wheel cylinder for wear and leakage. For models with ABS, disconnect the wiring plug for the rear wheel sensor using a small screwdriver. Loosen the four bolts securing the hub and brake backplate to the trailing arm, support the hub and backplate, and remove the bolts to withdraw the hub through the rear shoe assembly. Temporarily refit the bolts to hang the backplate and cable-tie it to the trailing arm to prevent straining the brake pipe and handbrake cable. Refitting is the reverse of removal, with specific attention to transferring the rear wheel sensor to a new hub by a Toyota dealer if applicable, cleaning corrosion from mating surfaces, applying copper grease for easier future removal, and tightening all fixings to the specified torque before refitting the brake drum.
