Toyota Matrix Rack and Pinion Boot

The Matrix Rack and Pinion Boot from Toyota protects the steering rack ends from dirt, debris, and fluid loss. The link between steering wheel rotation and the wheel turning can stay precise. The Rack and Pinion Boot acts like a rubber bellows and seals each end of the rack tube in which the tie rods connect. This facilitates the protection of internal gears and the piston that converts the rotary input into lateral movement of the rack from contaminants. The Rack and Pinion Boot holds hydraulic fluid and lubricant within while keeping moisture out. This protects the O-ring seals. It enables efficient power assist. It reduces the risk of stiff steering, grinding noise, or premature wear of the inner tie rod caused by abrasive particles. If the Rack and Pinion Boot is torn or cracked, it will not be able to do its job properly. Gear leakage will occur, and gears will suffer more damage than they should. This will cause the steering wheel to feel loose on center, and the vehicle may wander or pull. Routine examination of the Toyota Matrix Rack and Pinion Boot ensures that you can steer your Matrix with confidence. Further, it helps extend the life of the Toyota rack component. More importantly, it helps promote consistent Toyota Matrix handling. As such, it is crucial for everyday Toyota Matrix driving.

Toyota Matrix Rack and Pinion Boot Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace a Rack and Pinion Boot on a Toyota Matrix?
    A:
Lose the wheel bolts, lift the car, and prop it on jack-stands before you can remove the wheel. However, next we must take out the tie-rod end, and or the jam nut has to be taken off as well. Slide off the outer rack and pinion boot clamp using a pair of pliers since the ones that hold this component can be easily released as they are of spring-type. Next use the diagonal cutters to cut off the inner boot clamp because the two inner ends of the rack and pinion boots will be held in place by clamps that are going to be useless. Stepping out of the boot first and then before putting the new boot on the end of the rod pull the threads and serrations over with the tape so that they don't damage the small end of the new boot. Place the new boot on the rack and pinion such that it fits into the groove on the steering rod, then insert new clamps. Pull the tape away and then fit in the tie-rod end. Furthermore, fit the wheel and the nuts on the lug, and then drop the vehicle and finally torque the lug nuts.
