Toyota Solara Igniter

The Toyota Solara Igniter manages on off switching of coil current to spark plugs, delivering timely high voltage for smooth combustion. Hidden behind more famous coils and plugs, the Igniter receives low-amp signals from the ignition switch or engine computer, then rapidly opens and closes the coil's primary circuit, collapsing the magnetic field and creating the 15,000-40,000 volts that jump each plug gap. Two main styles served the Solara coupe throughout the Toyota production run, an early distributor-mounted Igniter that worked with manually set initial timing and mechanical advance weights, and a later distributorless Igniter integrated with the powertrain control unit for fully electronic timing based on crankshaft and camshaft sensors. The first style sits inside the distributor housing and relies on a pickup coil or hall effect switch to cue its transistor, while the second style uses direct data from a crankshaft position sensor for pinpoint spark and improved fuel economy, leaving no manual adjustment. Regardless of version, quick voltage checks and flicker tests diagnose a failed Igniter, and simple screw-out, plug-in steps restore the Toyota Solara ignition system to full health.

Toyota Solara Igniter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to test the igniter function on Toyota Solara?
    A:
This guide doesn't apply to integral Ignition Coil/igniter units on 2000+ Avalon and 1999+ Lexus ES 300 models. Testing these units is complex and best left to professionals. You can check the ignition confirmation signal, but identifying a bad igniter is a process of elimination. If suspected, have it tested by a dealer or qualified repair shop. Start by disconnecting the igniter's electrical connector. Check for battery voltage on terminal no. 9, 5.0 volts at terminal no. 4, and a fluctuating 0.1 to 4.5 volt signal at terminals no. 5, 6, and 7 while the engine is cranked. Also, check for continuity to a good chassis ground at terminal no.If all checks are good, reconnect the igniter, disconnect the ignition coils, and check for an ignition coil trigger signal. If absent, check the circuits from the igniter to the coils. If circuits are good, replace the igniter.
