    Q:
How to remove and install the igniter in breakerless and distributorless ignition systems on Toyota 4Runner? Posted by Customer
    A:
The igniter is a different unit from the distributor; breakerless ignition system igniter is set on the right side of the engine compartment over the air intake duct for 4-cylinder models or to the left side adjacent to the ignition coil for 3.0L V7 models. In distributorless ignition systems there is the igniter incorporated in the coil assembly and hence cannot be refitted. Start by loosening the cable of the negative terminal from the battery, and if the stereo has an anti-theft system then ensure that you have the right code to enter. Then, unplug the electrical connector from the igniter, after that take out the screws at the bracket and at last, the igniter bracket assembly can be held and removed from the engine compartment. The last step of the process resembles the previous, that is, they are carried out in the reversed sequence to installation.

    Q:
How to test the igniter function on Toyota Solara? Posted by Customer
    A:
This guide doesn't apply to integral ignition coil/igniter units on 2000+ Avalon and 1999+ Lexus ES 300 models. Testing these units is complex and best left to professionals. You can check the ignition confirmation signal, but identifying a bad igniter is a process of elimination. If suspected, have it tested by a dealer or qualified repair shop. Start by disconnecting the igniter's electrical connector. Check for battery voltage on terminal no. 9, 5.0 volts at terminal no. 4, and a fluctuating 0.1 to 4.5 volt signal at terminals no. 5, 6, and 7 while the engine is cranked. Also, check for continuity to a good chassis ground at terminal no.If all checks are good, reconnect the igniter, disconnect the ignition coils, and check for an ignition coil trigger signal. If absent, check the circuits from the igniter to the coils. If circuits are good, replace the igniter.
