A: At the specified intervals, the air filter should be replaced with a new one. A thorough program of preventive maintenance would require the filler to be inspected between changes. The air filter is located inside the air filter housing on the right front side of the engine compartment. On 1983 models, the filter is replaced by first pulling up the two plastic pop fasteners then removing the filter housing retaining ring. On 1982 through 1986 models, remove the plastic pop fasteners. Then release the filter housing retaining ring. Other models are similar. On 1981 models, first remove the air duct bolts and the duct then unfasten the clips and lift the air filter out. Lift the air filler housing and the element out of the engine compartment. Wipe out the inside of the air filter housing with a clean rag. Place the new filter into the air filter housing. Make sure it seats properly. To install, reverse the removal procedure. On 1983 models, be sure to align the tab on the housing with the notch in the cover before installing the retaining ring.
