Toyota Supra Power Steering Pump

Toyota Supra Power Steering Pump supplies hydraulic pressure for steering assistance in the vehicle. The Power Steering Pump is mounted to the engine and runs via a V-belt or serpentine belt from the crankshaft, pushing hydraulic fluid from a reservoir either attached or remote to a high-pressure hose that ends in a control valve. The control valve sends fluid either to one side or the other of the piston in the steering gear, so that the driver can turn the steering wheel with less effort. When the steering wheel is in the center position, the valve balances the pressure on the two sides of the piston. But when turned to one side, it supplies fluid to that side to assist movement. Low pressure fluid is then supplied back to the pump. When functioning correctly, the Power Steering Pump supports smooth steering on any Supra whether equipped with rack and pinion or linkage hydraulic systems. Commonly, customers express concerns about leaks, belt squeal, whining from low fluid, and reduced assist that may indicate a failing Power Steering Pump. Delivering the Toyota steering comfort, Toyota maneuverability, and Toyota driver effort reduction required in the Supra, the Power Steering Pump allows for the appropriate steering feel in each Supra.

Toyota Supra Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a power steering pump on Toyota Supra?
    A:
For the models from 1987 or later, start the procedure with lifting the car and placing it on jackstands, and then, remove the engine under-cover. Subsequently, ease the clamps and then disconnect the air control valve hoses from the pump provided that your kind has this feature. It is necessary to remove the union nut and take off the fluid return hose from the reservoir tank then, the power steering fluid should be drained into clean container. Next unscrew the pressure line from the pump. Get to a higher degree of tension on the power steering pump drivebelt and thereafter loosen the pulley nut. Slightly unscrew the drivebelt adjuster bolt and pull the drivebelt off the engine. Subsequently, undo the mounting bolts to get the power steering pump unit out of the assembly. It is a process, where the removal steps are done opposite, making certain that all the bolts and screws are tightened just as how tight they were before and the tension of the drive belt. Last but not least, fill up the pipe to the required optimum level of the fluid and pressurize the reservoir to release the trapped gases.
