Toyota Tacoma Headlight Switch

The Toyota Tacoma Headlight Switch allows truck drivers to activate and modify forward-facing lighting by turning or pulling on a knob or toggle to improve nighttime travel. The Headlight Switch is located on the dash on first-generation Tacoma models. It is found on the multifunction steering-column stalk on later Toyota models. This switch provides instant control over low beams, high beams, and off detents. The first type of dash-mounted unit operated with a rotary knob that you turn clockwise from a parking lamp position to full illumination. The other is a stalk-mounted unit which has a rotary collar for on and off selection and a fore-aft flick to swap from high to low, thus allowing you to use it with one hand while keeping your other on the wheel. The design of both schemes sends a small electrical current to the headlamp relay, which is responsible for feeding full battery power to the bulbs. Thus, the Headlight Switch itself only sees very little current and stays reliable. Using internal spring contacts that snap back crisply, the Tacoma lamps react instantly when the Headlight Switch is engaged. Each generation of Toyota Tacoma pickup is equipped with this Headlight Switch feature.

Toyota Tacoma Headlight Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to check the continuity of the turn signal switch/headlight switch on Toyota Tacoma?
    A:
Before working on Tacoma, disconnect the battery cable from its negative terminal and switch off any anti-theft audio lockout features first. To start, disconnect the battery cable, shut down the airbags, detach the steering wheel, and take away the steering column panels. Take off the power connection from the switch that controls signals and headlights. Using an ohmmeter, check the continuity of the switch terminals: When the light control switch is in OFF, you shouldn't detect electrical flow between any contacts. Only when the switch is in TAIL should it pass electricity between terminals 14 and 16, while terminals 13, 14, and 16 will link when the switch is in HEAD. Low beam on the headlight dimmer switch sees conductivity between terminals 16 and 17, High beam through terminal 7 and terminal 16, and If the switch does not operate, replace it. Disconnect the switch from its frame, then put it back together from reverse order of removal. Before mounting the steering wheel, carefully realign the cable spiral.
