Early Tercel models relied on a mechanical centrifugal and vacuum advance Distributor that applied breaker points, a rotor and a cap, with cam driven lobes opening the points to collapse the magnetic field and send the boosted charge to the plugs, and the Distributor required regular attention as parts wore and timing drifted. In the late seventies and eighties Toyota upgraded the ignition to an electronic Distributor, and this Distributor replaced the contact set with magnetic or hall sensors triggered by a toothed reluctor, letting an ignition module handle current break, which raised spark energy, cut maintenance, and kept timing accurate at higher revs. Regardless of version, both styles share a camshaft driven shaft that also spins the oil pump, while swing out weights add centrifugal advance and a diaphragm chamber provides vacuum advance for light load cruising. - Q: How to remove the distributor on Toyota Tercel?A:Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and unplug the electrical connectors from the distributor. Remove the cap from the number one cylinder spark plug wire terminal on the distributor. Turn the engine until the rotor points towards the spark plug terminal. Mark the distributor base, rotor tip, and cylinder head for alignment. Loosen the distributor collar bolts and remove the hold-down bolt. Pull out the distributor carefully. To reinstall, align the coupling's grooved tang with the housing protrusion if the crankshaft was turned. If not, insert the distributor as before. Check alignment marks and rotor position, loosely install the hold-down bolt. Reverse the steps to complete installation and check ignition timing before tightening the bolt.
