Q:
What Are the Guidelines for Checking and Adjusting the Clutch Pedal and Braking System in a Toyota Yaris and Toyota Echo? Posted by Customer
A:
The vehicle is equipped with a hydraulic clutch so, for the most part, wear in the clutch friction disc is automatically compensated for. If the clutch is working satisfactorily, further checking is not strictly necessary. Poor clutch operation may indicate the need for bleeding the hydraulic system. Otherwise, the pedal travel and stroke may be checked and adjusted. The braking system is self-adjusting. Provided the brake pedal feels satisfactory and the brakes work effectively, the chances are that the pedal does not need adjusting. Excessive brake pedal travel may indicate that the brakes need bleeding. Otherwise, if the pedal seems set too low, the free play is excessive, or if the history of the car is unknown, the brake pedal can be checked and adjusted.

Q:
How do I remove and refit the clutch pedal? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the clutch pedal, start by moving the driver's seat fully to the rear for better access. Consider removing the driver's seat if necessary. Use needle-nosed pliers to unhook and remove the pedal return spring, noting its orientation. Then, use the pliers to pull out the spring clip from the clevis pin that secures the master cylinder pushrod. Once the clip is removed, pull out the clevis pin to detach the clutch pedal. Unscrew and remove the pedal pivot bolt/nut, and remove the pedal. To refit the clutch pedal, reverse the removal process. Make sure to tighten the pedal pivot bolt/nut securely and thoroughly check the clutch operation before driving. If necessary, adjust the pedal height and engagement point. To do this, bleed the clutch first for accuracy. Measure the distance from the floor to the top of the rubber pad for pedal height. Check the pedal free play by depressing it until resistance is felt and measure the distance from the fully-released position to this point. The clutch pedal engagement point should be at least the specified distance from the pedal to the floor. If adjustments are needed, loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster bolt at the top of the pedal for height adjustment. For free play adjustment, loosen the locknut on the master cylinder pushrod and turn the pushrod until the desired free play dimension is achieved. Tighten the locknuts when adjustments are complete.
