Spark plug maintenance is key for engine efficiency. Use plugs specified in the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label or Owner's Handbook. If the engine is in good condition, spark plugs usually don't need attention between scheduled maintenance. To replace, remove the ignition coils in vehicles with a direct ignition system. Accessing the deeply recessed plugs requires a 16 mm spark plug socket and extension bar. Check each plug's condition upon removal. The electrode gap is crucial and should be set to the specified value. Before installing, ensure the plug's connector sleeves are tight and clean. Tighten the plugs to the specified torque with a torque wrench and spark plug socket, then refit the ignition coils and air cleaner.

To replace spark plugs, the socket protects the plug's insulator during installation. The wrench tightens the new plugs to the correct torque. Also, remove one plug at a time, cleaning the area with compressed air. Unscrew the plug with a socket wrench and extension. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads, align it with a rubber hose, and tighten it to the proper torque.

Work on one plug at a time, removing the wire and boot by twisting and pulling. Use compressed air to remove any dirt or foreign material from the spark plug area. Unscrew the spark plug using a socket wrench with a long extension.

It should have a rubber grommet to protect the porcelain insulator of the spark plug.

Tighten the plug to the specified torque.
