    Q:
How to remove and install upper Control Arm on 1996 through 2002 Toyota 4Runner? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure applies to 2WD and 4WD models. Starting with, it is recommended to free the wheel lug nuts before lifting the front part of car and placing it on jack stands with the parking brake engaged. Take out the wheel and unlock the brake caliper by freeing the clips and swing it aside up on a jack stand. Remove any bracket through bolt that is associated with the brake hose from the upper control arm and if there is the ABS system, then remove the speed sensor harness from the upper arm. On all vehicles other than 4WD T100 models, place the floor jack under the lower control arm and lift it a little but do not remove the jack until the completion of the steps. To transfer the balance of the T100 4WD models, you will need to detach the torsion bar. On 2WD Tacoma models, the stabilizer link assembly should be taken off. Lose the steering knuckle bolt to the upper control arm. especially for 2WD pick-up models, it is necessary to note the position and quantity of the shims between the upper control arm pivot shaft and the frame as well as all bolts and shims of the pivot shaft then fasten. On 4WD T100 models there is a pivot shaft-to-frame bolt that should be unscrewed and the arm needs to be detached from the vehicle. When using 4Runners and 4WD Tacoma models, one has to first unscrew the nut, washer, and a pivot bolt to unscrew the arm. Wear and deterioration signs must be observed on the bushings; if the bushings show crack and damage they should be replaced with new ones, and one has to take the arm to an automotive machine shop for the new bushings. Installation is the process of performing the opposite of removal by boldly tightening all the suspension fasteners in the correct torque. The pivot bolt/nut on 4Runners and 4WD Tacoma should be tightened with the vehicle at normal ride height, which is after lowering the vehicle or simulate by raise the lower control arm with a Floor Jack. When it comes to 2WD pick-up models, it is suggested to have the specified wheel alignment checked and then adjusted whenever needed.
