Q:
How to remove and install a carburetor? Posted by Customer
A:
Remove the fuel filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Caution: if the stereo in your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you have the correct activation code before disconnecting the battery. Remove the air cleaner housing. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle lever. If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the kick down cable or linkage from the throttle lever. Clearly label all vacuum hoses and fittings, then disconnect the hoses. Disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor. Label the wires and terminals, then unplug all the electrical connectors. Remove the mounting fasteners and detach the carburetor from the intake manifold. Remove the carburetor mounting gasket. Stuff a rag into the intake manifold openings to prevent debris from entering. Installation: Use a gasket scraper to remove all traces of gasket material and sealant from the intake manifold (and the carburetor, if it's being reinstalled), then remove the shop rag from the manifold openings. Clean the mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Place a new gasket on the intake manifold. Position the carburetor on the gasket and install the mounting fasteners. To prevent carburetor distortion or damage, tighten the fasteners to approximately 16 ft-lbs in a criss-cross pattern, 1/4-turn at a time. The remaining installation steps are the reverse of removal. Check and, if necessary, adjust the idle speed. Start the engine and check carefully for fuel leaks.

Q:
What precautions should be taken when running the engine without the air cleaner on the 1980 Toyota Land Cruiser? Posted by Customer
A:
Running the engine without the air cleaner can lean the fuel/air mixture enough to produce an engine backfire, so backfires are possible in this situation.
