To reduce emissions, the catalytic converter oxidizes and reduces hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide, converting them into harmless nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water. Periodically inspect the converter-to-exhaust pipe flanges and bolts for loose bolts or leaks. Check for damage to the converter protector and repair or replace if needed. Inspect the heat insulator for damage and ensure proper clearance. To replace the converter, jack up the vehicle, remove the heat protector, and detach the mounting bolts. Remove the old converter and gaskets, then install the new converter with new gaskets. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque and reinstall the heat protector.
