To reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide emissions, the three-way catalyst system, commonly known as a catalytic converter, oxidizes and reduces these chemicals, converting them into harmless nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water. Periodically inspect the catalytic converter-to-exhaust pipe mating flanges and bolts to ensure there are no loose bolts or leaks. Check for dents or damage to the catalytic converter protector and repair or replace if necessary. Inspect the heat insulator for damage and ensure proper clearance between the insulator and the catalytic converter. To replace the catalytic converter, jack up the vehicle and secure it on jack stands. Remove the heat protector and detach the mounting bolts from each end of the converter. Remove the old converter and gaskets, then install the new converter with new gaskets. Tighten the exhaust pipe-to-catalytic converter bolts to the specified torque and reinstall the heat protector.
