Q:
How to check and replace spark plug wires,Distributor Cap and Distributor Rotor on Toyota Celica? Posted by Customer
A:
The spark plug wires should be checked whenever new spark plugs are installed. Begin this procedure by visually checking the spark plug wires while the engine is running. In a darkened garage, start the engine and observe each plug wire. If there is a break in the wire, you will see arcing or a small spark at the damaged area. Make a note to obtain new wires if arcing is noticed. Then, allow the engine to cool and check the distributor cap and rotor. The spark plug wires should be inspected one at a time to prevent mixing up the order. Each original plug wire should be numbered or marked with tape to identify its location. Disconnect the plug wire from the spark plug, check inside the boot for corrosion, and push the wire and boot back onto the end of the plug. Wipe the entire length of the wire to remove dirt and grease, and check for burns, cracks, and other damage. Disconnect the wire from the distributor, check for corrosion and a tight fit, and replace the wire in the distributor. Inspect the remaining spark plug wires, ensuring they are securely fastened at the distributor and spark plug. If new spark plug wires are required, purchase a set for your specific engine model and replace them one at a time to avoid mix-ups in the firing order. Detach the distributor cap, look inside for cracks, carbon tracks, and worn or loose contacts, and pull the rotor off the distributor shaft to examine it for cracks and carbon tracks. Replace the cap and rotor if any damage or defects are noted. It is common practice to install a new cap and rotor whenever new spark plug wires are installed. However, if you wish to continue using the old cap, check the resistance between the spark plug wires and the cap first. If the indicated resistance exceeds the specified maximum value, replace the cap or wires. When installing a new cap, remove the wires from the old cap one at a time and attach them to the new cap in the exact same location to avoid firing order mix-ups.
