    Q:
How to remove, inspect, and refit the brake drum on Toyota Echo? Posted by Customer
    A:
However, there are some guidelines that should be observed prior to the continuation of the activity. Starting with chocking the front wheels, then, changing the gear into first regime and, finally, releasing the handbrake. Loosen the respective nuts of the wheels, lift the rear part of the car using a jack, and place it on some stands and then remove the right wheel. The drum should normally come off from hand; if it does not, ensure that the hand brake is properly off. This may involve; twisting the drum and applying a little force on each side of the drum, or unscrewing of the nut on the handbrake adjuster located inside the vehicle. Do not apply much pressure while running the shoe against the sharpening stone as this may damage the shoe parts. On the next size larger there are two small holes in which bolts can be screwed and tightened to evacuate the drum. Otherwise, unscrew the rubber inspection plug in the brake backplate, push in a thin screwdriver and turn the wheel at the back of the shoe adjuster that is rid of teeth. After pulling off the brake drum, clean the dust on the surface of the brake drum, brake shoes, wheel cylinder and the back plate with some grade brake cleaner or methylated spirit though one should not breathe in the dust because it may contain asbestos. Scrub the interior wall of the brake drum and check the inner friction surface for scratches or splits. If the drum was hard to remove perhaps it has a wear lip on the outer face. However, if a drum is cracked or deeply scored or exceeds max dia, then both the drums one with the fault and the opposite one should be replaced. Actually, regrinding the brake drum is not recommended. Place the wheel cylinder in a vice and remove the rubber boots to examine it externally, and feel it for dampness by lifting the boot with a small screwdriver and observing its colour for black brake dust. For refitting reverse the above removal procedures and if the drum is to be reused then make sure to tighten it with a new clip or star washer if provided. Once back in the garage, refit the wheel, lower the car and pedal the footbrake and handbrake on and off several times to centre the shoes and set the auto adjuster. Last of all, drive the car gently and test the brakes before proceeding to resume normal use of the car.
