On carburetor-equipped models, the air filter is located inside a housing on top of the engine. To remove the filter, release the spring clips, remove the wingnut, and detach the cover. Then, lift the element out by lifting up on the four clips and removing the wingnut and cover. On fuel-injected models, the air filter is located inside a housing at the right side of the engine compartment. To remove it, release the four spring clips that hold the housing together, lift the cover up, and remove the air filter element. Inspect the outer surface of the filter element and replace it if it is dirty. If it is only moderately dusty, it can be reused by blowing it clean with compressed air. Do not wash or oil the filter. If it cannot be cleaned satisfactorily, discard and replace it. While the cover is off, be careful not to drop anything into the housing or carburetor. Never drive the vehicle without the air cleaner installed to avoid engine wear and potential fire hazards. Wipe out the inside of the air cleaner housing and place the new filter properly. Finally, install the cover by reversing the removal steps.
