The air filter in carburetor models is on the engine top. Remove it by releasing spring clips, removing the wingnut and cover, and lifting the element out. In fuel-injected models, the filter is on the right side of the engine compartment. Remove it by releasing the housing's spring clips, lifting the cover, and removing the filter. Check the filter's surface and replace if dirty. If moderately dusty, clean with compressed air. Don't wash or oil the filter. Replace if it can't be cleaned. Avoid dropping anything into the housing or carburetor. Never drive without the air cleaner to prevent engine wear and fire hazards. Clean the air cleaner housing, place the new filter, and reinstall the cover.
