Loosen the threaded banjo fittings on both ends of the fuel filter with a flare nut wrench after relieving the fuel pressure. Disconnect both banjo fittings from the fuel filter and the bracket support bolts from the firewall, then remove the filter/bracket assembly from the engine compartment and remove the filter clamp bolt. Remove both bracket bolts from the firewall and remove the old filter and the filter support bracket. Remove the filter clamp bolt and separate the old filter from the bracket. Note that the inlet and outlet pipes are clearly labelled on their respective ends of the filter and that the flanged end of the filter faces downward. Install the new filter and bracket assembly and tighten the bracket bolts securely. Make sure that the new filter is installed so that it's facing the proper direction noted above. When correctly installed, the filter should be installed so that the outlet pipe pipe faces up and the inlet pipe faces downward. Using the new crush washers - two per banjo fitting - provided by the filter manufacturer, install the inlet and outlet banjo fittings and tighten to the specified torque. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

The fuel filter is located near the starter motor (early models) or near the fuel tank (late models) and is most easily accessible with the vehicle raised on a hoist or supported on jackstands. The lines are attached to the fuel filter with banjo bolts - be sure to install new copper washers. On late models, the fuel filter is located at the rear of the vehicle next to the fuel tank. Since the vehicle is equipped with fuel injection, it is important to relieve the fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel lines. Place a pan under the fuel filter to catch any spilled gasoline, then remove the banjo fitting bolts or flare-nut(s) from both ends of the filter. Discard the copper washers - new ones are packaged with the new fuel filter. Remove the mounting bolts and detach the filter. Hold the new filter in position and install the bolts. Be sure the filter is correctly oriented; the end marked IN must face toward the fuel tank. Make sure the lines are positioned between the tangs, then install the bolts and NEW washers or thread in the flare-nuts. Tighten the bolts/nuts securely, then start the engine and check carefully for leaks at the fuel line connections. If the connections are leaking, tighten the bolts/nuts slightly to eliminate the problem.

Loosen the fitting at the bottom of the fuel filter using a flare nut wrench if possible.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
