Toyota 44250-20161 Power Steering Gear Assembly(For Rack & Pinion)

To remove the steering gear, start by loosening the front wheel lug nuts and raising the front of the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the wheels and engine under covers if necessary. Place a drain pan under the steering gear and detach the power steering pressure and return lines, capping the ends to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Mark the relationship of the lower universal joint to the steering gear input shaft and remove the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Separate the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckle arms. Support the engine with a floor jack and block of wood, then remove the suspension cross member and engine center mounting member. Disconnect the exhaust pipe if working on a 1989 or earlier model. Support the steering gear and remove the steering gear bracket to firewall mounting bolts. Separate the intermediate shaft from the steering gear input shaft and lower it down and pull it out toward the left. Check the steering gear mounting grommets for wear or deterioration and replace if necessary.
