Q:
How to remove and install a cylinder head on V6 engine for Toyota Camry and 2007 through 2015 Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
A:
This procedure is applicable to either cylinder head, and it's important to note that the manufacturer recommends removing the engine and transaxle assembly for this process. During removal, begin by taking out the camshafts and camshaft housings, followed by the exhaust manifolds. When removing the left cylinder head, gradually loosen and remove the two front bolts, then proceed to gradually and evenly remove all cylinder head bolts in the reverse order of the tightening sequence, allowing for the cylinder head's removal from the engine block. Discard the old cylinder head gasket. For installation, ensure pristine cleanliness of the cylinder head and block mating surfaces and eliminate any traces of carbon or old gasket material, cleaning with brake system cleaner. Take care to prevent oil presence on these surfaces to ensure proper gasket sealing. Safeguard the cylinders from debris during work, using shop rags, and use a vacuum cleaner for debris removal. Inspect the mating surfaces for damage, addressing any slight issues with a file and resorting to machining for excessive damage. Chase the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes with an appropriately sized tap, clean with compressed air, and confirm no debris remains. Position the cylinder head gasket with the lot number stamp correctly, and then place the cylinder head. Apply a light coat of oil to new cylinder head bolts and install them with washers, tightening gradually and evenly following the specified sequence to initial torque. Afterward, mark and retighten each bolt 90 degrees twice, totaling a 180-degree turn from the initial torque. Ensure the correct sequence for tightening. If the left cylinder head is being installed, include the two front head bolts. If both cylinder heads were removed, install the other cylinder head. Proceed with the installation of the intake and exhaust camshafts, camshaft timing oil control valve, oil control valve filter, and VVT-i sensor. Follow with the installation of the timing chains, timing chain cover, and all associated components. Conclude the installation process by reversing the removal steps, including installing the engine/transaxle assembly, refilling oil and coolant, reconnecting the battery cable, starting the engine, and conducting a leak check.
