The first thing is to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery and then find a comfortable position by jacking the vehicle to place it on some stands. At the bottom, unbolt the nuts holding the exhaust pipe to the manifold, and pull out the hose off the air intake duct as well as the duct itself. The steps that follow are disconnecting the oxygen sensor electrical connector, the removal of the power steering pump brace and the removal of the heat insulator's retaining nuts. For turbo models, therefore, it will be necessary to unbolt the exhaust manifold stay and to take it off. Last, take out seven exhaust manifold to cylinder head nuts and disconnect the manifold. For installation, make sure that the contact surfaces of the manifold and cylinder head are free from some previous gasket material and carbon deposits, then put on a new gasket using a gasket scraper. Check the exhaust manifold for warpage using a straightedge and feeler gauge after cleaning and if warpage is greater than the manufacturers maximum allowanced, replace manifold. Remove the old gasket and replace it with a new one with the protruding portion installed at the rear when doing 1987 and newer models. I finally fit the exhaust manifold and tightened seven mounting nuts along it with an even torque of 18 ft. lbs in three passes starting with midpoint and moving towards the ends, clockwise and anti-clockwise. The other steps involve installation the the reverse order of the removal process.

The catalytic converter used in these vehicles is a three-way catalyst design. It oxidizes, reduces, and converts hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOX) emissions into nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water. This system effectively reduces harmful emissions in the exhaust. Some late model turbo and California models may employ two converters.
