To remove the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit assembly from a vehicle, first, relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, remove the rear seat from inside the passenger compartment and the fuel pump/sending unit floor service hole cover. Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel line, and remove the retaining bolts before carefully withdrawing the assembly from the fuel tank. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump and remove the pump from the assembly, either by sliding the hose clamp up the hose or by removing the fuel-sending unit and fuel filler and prying up the housing snap-retainers in sequence. Finally, remove the clip securing the inlet strainer to the pump and inspect it for contamination before replacing it if necessary. To install the fuel pump/sending unit assembly, reassemble it in the reverse order of disassembly and connect the fuel line and electrical connector before completing the remainder of the installation in reverse.

If the fuel pressure is not within specifications, you should check the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel lines, and fuel injectors for any issues.

For general checks related to the fuel system, start by ensuring that the fuel tank has an adequate fuel level. Verify the operation of the fuel pump by having an assistant turn the ignition switch to ON and listen for a brief whirring noise as the pump comes on and pressurizes the system. If there is no response from the fuel pump, check the fuel pump's electrical circuit. To perform a fuel pump pressure check, relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the fuel filter outlet line, and connect an adapter and fuel pressure gauge. With the ignition key on, the fuel pump should run for about two seconds, and the pressure reading on the gauge should be noted. The pressure should hold steady and not drop below the minimum specifications after the pump stops running. During engine idle, the pressure should remain the same. If the pressure readings are within the specified limits, the system is operating properly. If the fuel pressure is not within specifications, further checks and actions are needed. In the case of a non-operating fuel pump, the fuel pump's electrical circuit should be checked by inspecting relevant fuses and relays. If necessary, the fuel pressure regulator, fuel filter, fuel lines, and injectors should be examined for restrictions or damage. If the fuel pressure is still low, replacing both the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel pump is recommended. Finally, relay checks can be performed by examining continuity between terminals and ensuring proper voltage availability. If continuity or voltage is not as expected, the relay should be replaced.

To perform a fuel pump pressure check, you should relieve the fuel system pressure, connect a fuel pressure gauge, turn off all accessories, and switch the ignition key on. The fuel pump should run for two seconds, and the pressure should remain steady after it stops.
