Note how far the seal is recessed in the bore.

Remove the engine/transaxle assembly, then separate the transaxle from the engine. Remove the flywheel or driveplate. Pry the Crankshaft Seal from the rear of the engine with a screwdriver. Be careful not to nick or scratch the crankshaft or the seal bore. Be sure to note how far it's recessed into the bore before removal so the new seal can be installed at the same depth. Thoroughly clean the seal bore in the block with a shop towel. Remove all traces of oil and dirt. Lubricate the outside diameter of the seal and install the seal over the end of the crankshaft. Make sure the lip of the seal points toward the engine. Preferably, a seal installation tool is needed to press the new seal back into place. If the proper seal installation tool is unavailable, use a large socket, a section of pipe, or a blunt tool and carefully drive the new seal squarely into the seal bore and flush with the edge of the engine block. Install the flywheel or driveplate. Install the transaxle to the engine, then install the engine/transaxle assembly.

Reinstall the crankshaft timing sprocket and timing belt, being careful not to scratch the crankshaft sensor portion of the sprocket. Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the front seal.

Reinstall the crankshaft pulley and tighten the crankshaft pulley retaining bolt. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal.

Drive the new seal into place using a seal driver or a socket with a slightly smaller outside diameter. Make sure it's installed squarely and to the same depth as the original.

A large socket, section of pipe, or a blunt tool can be used to carefully drive the new seal squarely into the seal bore and flush with the edge of the engine block.

The remainder of the installation is the reverse of the removal process.

The installation process for the crankshaft seal involves several steps. First, the crankshaft must be installed, followed by the main bearing caps or cap assembly. Next, the new seal should be placed in the retainer and the retainer should be bolted to the block. It is important to carefully inspect the seal contact surface on the crankshaft for any damage that could cause oil leaks. If the crankshaft is damaged, a new one will be necessary. To remove the old seal from the retainer, it can be driven out from the backside using a hammer and punch. Take note of how far the old seal is recessed before removing it, as the new seal will need to be recessed the same amount. Avoid scratching or damaging the bore in the retainer. Prior to installing the new seal, ensure that the retainer is clean and apply a thin coat of engine oil to the outer edge of the seal. It is recommended to press the seal into place using a press or a vise with smooth pieces of wood to distribute the force evenly. If necessary, the seal can be tapped into the retainer with a hammer and a block of wood. Before slipping the seal/retainer over the crankshaft and bolting it to the block, lubricate the seal lips with clean engine oil or multipurpose grease. Depending on the engine type, either a new gasket with sealant or a 3/32-inch wide bead of anaerobic sealant should be applied. Finally, tighten the bolts gradually.

The crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal should be lubricated with multi-purpose grease.

Run the engine and check for oil leaks at the front seal.

The retainer bolts should be installed and tightened, ensuring that the bottom sealing flange of the retainer does not extend below the bottom sealing flange of the block.
