To remove the rear axle, start by loosening the rear wheel nuts and chocking the front wheels, then select 1st gear or P for automatics, jack up the rear of the car, and securely support it on axle stands before removing the rear roadwheels. Disconnect the rear brake flexible hoses from the rigid pipes leading to the backplates, anticipating some fluid spillage, and if possible, clamp the hoses before disconnecting them. Slide out the metal clips securing the hoses on each side and move them clear of the axle. Unbolt the brackets for the handbrake cable and, if applicable, the ABS sensor wiring from the rear axle, ensuring the cables and wiring are moved as far clear as possible to avoid entanglement when lowering the axle. Remove the rear hubs and tie up the brake backplates clear of the axle. Next, remove the rear springs and support the rear axle using two substantial jacks, ideally with assistance due to the axle's weight and awkwardness. Make a final check to ensure nothing is still attached to the axle that could hinder its removal. With the axle securely supported, unscrew and remove the pivot bolts on each side, then lower the axle on the jacks until it can be withdrawn from under the car. For refitting, reverse the removal process while ensuring not to fully tighten the axle mounting bolts or shock absorber lower mounting nuts until the car's weight is on its wheels, tighten all fixings to the specified torque, reassemble the springs and rear hubs, and bleed the brakes.
