Power is transferred from the transaxle to the wheels through a pair of axle shafts in the vehicle. These axle shafts have inner and outer ends. The inner end of each axle shaft is connected to the transaxle and directly splined to the differential side gears. On the other hand, the outer ends of the axle shafts are splined to the axle hubs and secured in place by a large nut. It's important to note that the left-side axle shaft is shorter, while the right-side axle shaft is longer and includes an Intermediate shaft supported by a bearing in the middle. The inner ends of the axle shafts feature sliding constant velocity (CV) joints, which allow for both angular and axial motion. The inner joint assembly can consist of a tripod bearing and a joint tulip or a ball-and-cage type CV joint that allows the joint to slide in and out as the axle shaft moves with the wheel. In case of a boot failure, the CV joints can be disassembled and cleaned, but if any components are damaged, the entire joint assembly needs to be replaced. On the other hand, the outer joint, comprising ball bearings between an inner race and an outer race, enables angular movement but not axial motion. Regular inspection of the boots surrounding the CV joints is crucial to identify any damage or leakage of lubricant. If a CV joint boot is torn, it must be replaced immediately to prevent damage to the joints. Replacement of the boot typically involves removing the axle shaft.
