To remove an axle shaft, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and setting the parking brake. Remove the wheel cover or hubcap, cotter pin, and bearing nut lock from the axle shaft hub nut. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and remove the wheel. Remove any engine splash shields in the way and the axle shaft/hub nut. Pry the control arm down to separate the components and tap the end of the axle shaft with a soft-faced hammer or a hammer and a brass punch to loosen it from the hub splines. Place a drain pan underneath the transaxle and remove the case protector if necessary. Pull out on the steering knuckle and detach the axle shaft from the hub. To install the axle shaft, follow the reverse of the removal procedure and push the axle shaft sharply inward to seat the retaining ring on the inner CV joint in the groove in the differential side gear. Check the intermediate shaft bearing for smooth operation and replace it if necessary.

The drive axles transmit power from the transaxle to the wheels.
