Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, ensuring the transmission and transfer case are in Neutral with the parking brake off. Use a scribe, white paint, or a hammer and punch to place alignment marks on all driveshaft flanges and the slip joint, including the U-joint and companion flanges, to maintain the driveshaft's balance upon reinstallation. Detach the bolts from the differential and transfer case flanges, then remove the driveshaft(s) from the vehicle, using a large screwdriver to immobilize the U-joint while loosening the flange nuts. While the driveshaft is removed, check the U-joints for play by pushing and pulling them; if any movement is detected, replace them. For installation, reverse the removal process, ensuring to match the marks made on all flanges and tighten all fasteners securely.

All 4WD vehicles utilize two driveshafts; the primary shaft connects the transfer case to the front differential, while the rear driveshaft links the transfer case to the rear differential. The driveshaft universal joints are of the cross type and can be replaced independently from the driveshaft. Driveshafts are finely balanced during production, and whenever they are removed or disassembled, they must be reassembled and reinstalled in the exact manner and positions they were originally in to prevent excessive vibration. Both front and rear axles feature a 'banjo' style differential that transfers the turning force of the driveshaft to the axleshafts, which are splined at their inner ends to fit into the splines of the differential gears, with outer ends designed as either semi-floating or full floating, depending on the vehicle's year and model; all front axles are of the full floating design. Full floating axles can be easily identified by the ring of bolts in the center of the hub. Due to the complexity and critical nature of differential adjustments, along with the special equipment required for these operations, it is advisable for any disassembly of the differential to be performed by a qualified repair facility.
