If the struts or coil springs show signs of wear such as leaking fluid, loss of damping capability, or cracked coil springs, it is important to explore all options before starting any work. The strut/shock absorber assemblies cannot be serviced and must be replaced if there is a problem. However, you may be able to find strut assemblies complete with springs on an exchange basis, which can save time and effort. Before disassembling your vehicle, make sure to check the cost and availability of parts. To begin the disassembly process, remove the strut and spring assembly and mount it in a vise, taking care to protect the unit from damage. Use a spring compressor to relieve pressure from the upper spring seat, following the tool manufacturer's instructions. Once the spring is compressed, loosen the damper shaft nut and remove the nut and suspension support. Inspect the bearing in the suspension support for smooth operation and replace if necessary. Check the rubber portion of the suspension support for any cracking or deterioration and replace if needed. Remove the upper spring seat and insulator from the damper shaft. Carefully lift the compressed spring from the assembly and set it aside, being cautious to keep your head away from the end of the spring. Slide off the rubber bumper from the damper shaft and inspect the lower insulator for wear, cracking, and hardness, replacing if necessary. To reassemble, if the lower insulator is being replaced, position it with the dropped portion seated in the lowest part of the seat. Extend the damper rod and install the rubber bumper. Place the coil spring onto the lower insulator, ensuring the end of the spring rests in the lowest part of the insulator. Install the upper insulator and spring seat, aligning the flats in the hole in the seat with the flats on the damper shaft. Align the "OUT" mark of the spring upper seat with the mark of the upper insulator. If working on a front strut, make sure the arrow on the spring seat faces toward the lower bracket. Install the dust seal and suspension support onto the damper shaft. Install the nut and tighten it to the specified torque. Remove the spring compressor tool. Finally, install the strut/spring assembly onto the vehicle.
