If a malfunction occurs in the starting circuit, it is important not to immediately assume that the starter is the cause. Instead, several items should be checked. Firstly, ensure that the battery cable clamps are clean and tightly connected to the battery. Secondly, inspect the condition of the battery cables and replace any defective ones. Thirdly, test the battery and replace it if it fails the tests. Additionally, check the wiring and connections of the starter solenoid, as well as the mounting bolts of the starter. It is also important to check the fusible link and repair the circuit if it is burned. The operation of the Park/Neutral switch and the starter relay should be checked as well. If the starter does not activate when the ignition switch is turned to the start position, check for battery voltage to the solenoid and perform a bench test on the starter if necessary. If the starter turns over slowly, check the cranking voltage and current drawn from the battery, and replace the starter if the values are not within the correct range. Finally, if the starter is receiving voltage but does not activate, remove and check the starter/solenoid assembly on the bench, ensuring to rotate the crankshaft pulley if necessary.

To remove the starter motor assembly from the engine compartment, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. Then, remove the engine cover(s) and the air filter housing and air inlet duct. Next, detach the electrical connectors from the starter/solenoid assembly. Finally, remove the starter motor mounting bolts and take out the starter motor assembly. To reinstall, simply follow the reverse order of the removal steps.

First, remove the engine cover. Then, remove the air filter housing, upper and lower air intake ducts, and air filter bracket. Finally, remove the battery and detach the electrical connectors from the starter/solenoid assembly and remove the starter motor mounting bolts to remove the starter.

After disconnecting the battery terminal cable, the engine cover(s) should be removed.
