Q:
What is the location and function of the brake light switch? Posted by Customer
A:
The brake light switch is located on the brake pedal bracket. You'll need to remove the trim panel beneath the steering column to get to the switch and connector. With the brake pedal in the fully released position, the switch opens the brake light circuit. When the brake pedal is depressed, the switch closes the circuit and sends current to the brake lights. If the brake lights are inoperative, check the fuse and the bulbs. If the fuse and bulbs are okay, verify that voltage is available at the switch. If there's no voltage to the switch, search for an open circuit condition between the fuse block and the switch. If there is voltage to the switch, close the switch (depress the brake pedal) and verify that there's voltage on the other side of the switch. If there's no voltage on the other side of the switch, replace the switch. If there is voltage but the brake lights still don't work, look for an open circuit condition between the switch and the brake lights. Note: There is always the possibility that all of the brake light bulbs are burned out, but this is not very likely. To replace, remove the trim panel below the steering column. Unplug the electrical connector from the switch. Rotate the switch counterclockwise. Remove the switch from its bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal. Adjust the switch.

Q:
How to adjust the Brake Light Switch? Posted by Customer
A:
Pedal height refers to the distance the brake pedal sits off the floor. If the pedal height is not within the specified range, it is important to check for any damage to the brake pedal, pedal arm, pedal mounting bracket, and dash panel. In such cases, the brake light switch should be adjusted, but it is advised not to adjust the pushrod length as it can alter the pedal force ratio. It is worth noting that if the pedal reserve height is satisfactory, no changes are necessary. To measure the brake pedal height accurately, ensure that the pedal is fully returned and activate the power brake booster by starting the engine and depressing the accelerator several times. The measurement should be taken with the carpet pulled back and the brake pedal pad removed. Pedal freeplay refers to the pedal slack or the distance the pedal can be depressed before it affects the brake system. If the pedal height is not within the specified range, it is important to check for any damage to the brake pedal, pedal arm, pedal mounting bracket, and dash panel. In such cases, the brake light switch should be adjusted. However, adjusting the pushrod length is not recommended as it can alter the pedal force ratio. Similar to pedal height, if the pedal reserve height is satisfactory, no changes are necessary. To measure the brake pedal freeplay, turn off the engine and depress the brake pedal several times before taking the measurement. If the freeplay is incorrect, adjust the brake light switch. If the issue persists, troubleshoot the brake system. Pedal reserve height refers to the distance the pedal sits off the floor when fully depressed, measured from the center of the brake pedal pad to the dash panel. If the reserve height is not within the specified range, it is important to check for any damage to the brake pedal, pedal arm, pedal mounting bracket, and dash panel. If the reserve height is still incorrect, troubleshooting the brake system is necessary. To adjust the brake light switch, disconnect the electrical connector and remove the switch by rotating it counterclockwise. Reinsert the switch until the body contacts the cushion, then turn it 1/4-turn clockwise to lock it into position. The plunger on the brake light switch should be measured for proper extension, and if necessary, the brake pedal can be pulled out slightly before reinserting the switch to achieve the correct distance.
