To remove and replace the fuel tank in a vehicle, first, relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Then, raise the rear seat cushions and remove the access hole cover to disconnect the electrical connectors from the vapor pressure sensor and the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor. Next, raise the vehicle and remove the fuel tank rock guard before disconnecting the Type B quick-connect fitting for the fuel tank breather line and the fuel filler hose from the fuel tank. Siphon or hand-pump any remaining fuel from the tank before disconnecting the fuel supply and fuel return line quick-connect fittings. Support the fuel tank and remove the two fuel tank straps before carefully lowering the tank and ensuring that nothing is still connected. Finally, installation is the reverse of removal.

Fuel tanks in vehicles are not repairable and must be replaced if damaged. Cleaning contaminated fuel tanks should only be done by a trained professional due to the potential danger involved. Even after cleaning, explosive fumes may remain inside the tank. If the tank is removed, it should not be placed in an area where sparks or open flames could ignite the fumes, especially in a garage with a gas appliance.
