Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Drain the cooling system. For the front heater core, have the air conditioning system discharged and the refrigerant recovered. Remove the instrument panel and the defroster ducting. Loosen the screws at the juncture of the heater pipes and the heater core, then separate the metal heater pipes from the heater core. Place old towels under the heater case to prevent coolant drips. Pull the heater core up and out of the heating unit. Install the new heater core using new O-rings to seal the pipes. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks and proper system operation. For the rear heater core in four-door models, have the air conditioning system discharged and recover the refrigerant. Disconnect the coolant lines and AC line connections under the floor. Remove the rear seats, scuff plates, and trim panel. Move the wiring harness and remove the heating duct. Remove the rear heating/air conditioning unit and the rear heater core. Install the new heater core using new O-rings. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks and proper system operation. For 2003 and earlier five-door models, disconnect the coolant lines under the vehicle. Remove the front seats, scuff plates, kick panels, and floor console. Remove the rear covers over the heating unit. Remove the rear heating unit and the heater core. Install the new heater core using new O-rings. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks and proper system operation. For 2004 and later five-door models, remove various components to access the rear cooling unit. Disconnect the heater hoses, refrigerant lines, and air ducts. Remove the A/C unit case, blower motor, power transistor, thermistor, and fan shroud. Remove the water valve and reassemble the unit. Refill the cooling system, reconnect the battery, and check for leaks and proper operation.
