- Q: How to remove and install the upper and lower control arms for the 1987 Toyota Supra?A: To remove the upper arm, first loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands under the frame rails while blocking the front wheels and removing the rear wheel. Support the knuckle and hub assembly with wire to prevent swinging when disconnected from the upper suspension arm, and support the lower arm with a floor jack, maintaining this position throughout the procedure. Remove the upper suspension arm-to-hub carrier bolt and nut, then separate the upper arm from the hub carrier using a balljoint separator tool. Next, remove the upper arm pivot bolts and nuts, and take the upper suspension arm out of the vehicle. For installation, position the arm in its mounting bosses and install the pivot bolts and nuts without fully tightening them yet. Connect the balljoint to the hub carrier and install the nut, tightening it to the specified torque. Raise the floor jack until the vehicle just lifts off the jackstand, then tighten the pivot bolt nuts to the specified torque. Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. For the lower arm removal, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands under the frame rails while blocking the front wheels and removing the rear wheel. Support the hub carrier with a floor jack and mark the position of the adjusting cam(s) to the subframe before removing the pivot bolts and nuts from the lower suspension arms. Remove the bolts and nuts securing the rear suspension arms to the hub carrier assembly, disconnect the stabilizer link from the lower suspension arm, and then remove the lower arm-to-frame pivot bolts and nuts before taking the arm(s) out of the vehicle. For installation, place the lower suspension arm(s) without fully tightening the nuts at this time, aligning the matchmarks made on the adjustment cam(s) and subframe. Reinstall the stabilizer link to the lower suspension arm, position a floor jack under the lower arm, raise it until the vehicle just lifts off the jackstand, and then tighten the nuts to the specified torque values. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque, ensuring to have the alignment checked at a dealer service department or an alignment shop.
