1990 Toyota Land Cruiser Crankshaft Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: Can the Rear Crankshaft Seal Be Replaced Without Removing the Oil Pan or Crankshaft for the 1990 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Generally, the Crankshaft Seal, which is located at the rear main journals, can be replaced without removing the oil pan as well as the crankshaft. Start with the unsafe removal of the transmission. If a manual transmission is present, then remove the pressure plate and the clutch disc. Next, unlock and take off the flywheel or the driveplate as the case may be. With a seal removal tool or a large screwdriver, gently interact the seal with the block and you should hear a snapping sound and the seal should pop out, but do not scratch the crankshaft as this will affect the new seal and it will leak. Degrease and clean the bore in the block and the seal contact surface on the crankshaft and look for objectionable solvent scratches or nicks that will ruin the new seal lip and check for crankshaft damage. If there is crankshaft damage, there will be a need for a new or a different crankshaft. Coat the outer part of the new seal with a thin layer of engine oil or multi-purpose grease and also grease the seal lip with moly-base grease. Gently abrade the end of the crankshaft and insert the new seal, using a hammer and a large socket or a rounded punch; the beveled surface of the seal must face the front of the engine. Replace the flywheel or driveplate, then replace the clutch disk and pressure plate if a manual transmission is used; replace the transmission.
