1994 Toyota Tercel Fuel Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the fuel pump for the 1994 Toyota Tercel?
A: To replace the fuel pump in a car, first relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. For mechanical pump (carbureted models), relieve the fuel tank pressure by removing the fuel filler cap. Locate the fuel pump mounted on the left rear corner of the cylinder head and disconnect the hoses from the pump, plugging them immediately to prevent fuel leakage. Unscrew the fasteners that retain the pump to the cylinder head, inspect the fuel pump arm for wear, and coat it with clean engine oil before installing it. Use a gasket scraper or putty knife to remove old gasket material from the mating surfaces on the cylinder head and fuel pump. For electric pump (fuel-injected models), remove the fuel tank cap and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On 1990 models, remove the fuel tank and place it on a workbench. Remove the fuel pump assembly retaining bolts from the top of the fuel tank and carefully withdraw the fuel pump assembly. Pull the lower end of the fuel pump loose from the bracket and remove the rubber cushion. Remove the clip securing the filter to the pump and inspect the filter for contamination. Replace the filter if necessary. If only replacing the fuel pump filter, install the new filter, clip, and rubber cushion, and push the lower end of the pump back into the bracket. If replacing the fuel pump, loosen the hose clamp at the upper end of the pump, disconnect the pump from the hose, disconnect the wires from the pump terminals, and remove the pump. Installation is the reverse of removal.
