2003 Toyota Tacoma Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the cylinder heads in V6 engine for the 2003 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Before removing the cylinder heads, turn off the engine, open the hood and unfasten the negative terminal of the battery, get the anti theft code if there is any. Pull out the coolant, intake air housing plenum, fuel inlet and out tubes, injectors, exhaust flange, alternator belt and web, distributor if any, intake manifold, timing belt, camshaft gears, and the upper wheel/pulley. Lift of the upper timing belt cover and pull the camshaft(s) out from the heads. For the 3.4L engines, the hex bit should be used to remove the recessed head bolts and 1/4 turn of the cylinder head bolts to come out until it is held by hand then lifting the cylinder head off of the engine block calmly to avoid deformation. Do the same with the other head. When installing, the mating surface should be clean using gasket scraper and cleaning agents; the surfaces should be inspected for a damage. Follow up the threads in the cylinder head bolt holes and blow it with compressed air. Remove the bolts, cut each one to the length you need and re-thread them in a vise to restore the gnarled threads: place new gaskets over the dowel pins in the block. Place the head on the block such that the gasket does not get shifted, lubricate the threads of the new bolts to be used generously with clean engine oil and then screw them in the holes originally occupied by the used bolts and just tighten them as much as can be done by merely applying hand pressure. According to the order mentioned above, then apply the required force to tighten up bolts and later use some identification mark to differentiate the former position of the bolt head. Turn every bolt an extra 1/4 turn two times, and turn the recessed bolt for vehicles with 3.4L engines. Do the same for the other cylinder head and perform all the following steps in order installed in its reverse manner. Last but not the least is refilling of the cooling system, changing of oil and filter, testing the engine and searching for any leaks.
