Take off the
Fuel Tank cap and then loosen the cable from the negative terminal of the automobile battery, though it is advisable to look at the stereo unit whether it contains an anti-theft mechanism. For 1989 and earlier models: Locate the fuel tank and take it to a workbench, you will then have to undo the fuel pump retaining screws and slowly pull out the fuel pump Bracket and the assembly out of the tank. Disconnect the lower end of the fuel pump from the bracket by pulling it and taking out the rubber insulation at the bottom of the pump also remove the clip fixed at the filter connected to the pump. Cleaning the filter and check whether the filter is contaminated or not and if yes, replace it with a new one. Reinstall the assembly in the fuel tank only if you have replaced the fuel pump filter, and place the new filter, clip, and rubber cushion, finally, push the lower end of the pump back into the bracket. if in inserting the fuel pump, first loosen the hose clamp at the upper end and also detach the pump from the hose you should also detach the wires from the terminals of the pump and then finally remove the pump and if replacing it should reverse the process of removal. To work with 1990 and later models, two things are needed, namely, the rear seat cushion and floor service hole cover must be taken off, the next step is to take off the fuel union bolt and gaskets, the outlet pipe must be disconnected, and finally, the fuel pump and bracket assembly has to be lifted out after removing eight bolts accordingly. Disconnect the wiringHarness, fuel sender wire, remove the nut/washer/screws, slide the lower end of the pump out of the bracket, remove the fuel line and pump. Pull the rubber cushion from the lower end of the fuel pump, unpop the clip that is used to secure the filter, and examine the filter for dirt wherein in case it has clogged, it is best that it is replaced. Put in the new filter, clip, and rubber cushion, slide the lower end of the pump to the bracket and replace the pump/bracket assembly into a proper slot in fuel tank. Last of all, bolt the fuel gauge sending unit to the pump bracket, join the wires and end the car fitting process in a reversal of these steps.
