How to check and replace the Ignition Coil on a Toyota Celica?

Detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and remove the distributor cap. Using an ohmmeter, check the coil by measuring the resistance between the positive and negative terminals to assess the primary resistance for specific engine models, and compare your reading with the specified coil primary resistance. Next, measure the resistance between the positive terminal and the high tension terminal to check the secondary resistance for different engine models, and compare this reading with the specified coil secondary resistance. If either test yields resistance values outside the specified range, replace the coil. For replacement, detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the distributor, and take off the coil dust cover. Label and disconnect the electrical wires from the coil terminals, then remove the four coil mounting bolts to separate it from the distributor assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Toyota Celica Ignition Coil

The Toyota Celica Ignition Coil uses the 12-volt supply from the vehicle's battery to create the high voltage needed to create a spark that ignites the air fuel mixture in each cylinder. Embedded within plastic or epoxy, the coil encases a laminated iron core. This core is first wrapped with hundreds of thicker primary copper wire turns, then with thousands of thinner secondary windings. At the point that the ignition switch is energized and the current is sent through the primary winding, a magnetic field develops which collapses when the current is interrupted. This collapse induces a voltage on the secondary winding, which may be in the range of 15,000 to 40,000 volts. The high-tension surge leaves the tower, goes through an ignition circuit, and jumps the gap of the spark plug. The housing of the Ignition Coil on the Toyota Celica is designed to resist heat and vibration and help protect the internal windings. In any application of the Toyota Celica, the Ignition Coil has to provide the required voltage. Toyota Celica engines have a standard Ignition Coil design. A malfunctioning Ignition Coil may cause misfires, rough running, reduced performance, or a complete no-start condition, especially as heat, vibration, or electrical resistance increases with age.

Next, measure the resistance between the positive terminal and the high tension terminal to check the secondary resistance for different engine models, and compare this reading with the specified coil secondary resistance. If either test yields resistance values outside the specified range, replace the coil. For replacement, detach the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, remove the distributor, and take off the coil dust cover. Label and disconnect the electrical wires from the coil terminals, then remove the four coil mounting bolts to separate it from the distributor assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
