Before removing the fuel tank, run the fuel level as low as possible. Drain the tank by removing the fuel filler pipe and relieving the residual pressure in the fuel system. Disconnect the battery and wiring plug from the
Fuel Pump/
Fuel Level Sensor. Jack up the rear of the car, remove the rear wheels and tank lower heat shield. Disconnect the filler pipe, breather hoses, and fuel supply/vapour pipes from the tank. Check for any remaining connected pipes or wires. With assistance, loosen the four mounting bolts and lower the tank to the ground. Inspect the tank for damage or deterioration and swill it out with clean fuel if contaminated. Do not attempt repairs on a leaking or damaged tank. Place the tank in a safe area away from sparks or open flames. Check the condition of the filler pipe and replace if necessary. To refit the tank, ensure all connections are secure, tighten the retaining bolts to specified torque, and filter any previously-drained fuel before returning it to the tank.
