Before proceeding with the removal of the fuel tank, it is important to run the fuel level as low as possible. To drain the tank, remove the fuel filler pipe from the base and let the fuel drain into a container. Relieve the residual pressure in the fuel system and equalize tank pressure by removing the fuel filler cap. Disconnect the battery negative lead and then disconnect the wiring plug and pipes from the top of the fuel pump/gauge sender unit. Chock the front wheels, jack up the rear of the car, and support it on axle stands. Remove the rear wheels and the tank lower heat shield. Disconnect the filler pipe, breather hoses, and fuel supply/vapour pipes from the tank. Check for any remaining connected pipes or wires. With the assistance of an assistant or a trolley jack, support the tank and loosen the four mounting bolts. Lower the tank to the ground and remove it from under the car. While the tank is removed, inspect it for damage or deterioration. If necessary, swill out the tank with clean fuel if it is contaminated with sediment or water. Do not attempt any repairs on a leaking or damaged fuel tank. Place the tank in a safe area away from sparks or open flames. Check the condition of the filler pipe and replace it if needed. To refit the tank, ensure all connections are securely fitted, tighten the tank retaining bolts to the specified torque, and if there was evidence of contamination, filter any previously-drained fuel before returning it to the tank.
