How to disconnect and remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on a Toyota Highlander?

Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition switch by depressing the release tab and pulling off the connector. Remove the ignition switch retaining screws and detach the switch from the Ignition Lock Cylinder housing, then installation is the reverse of removal. Place the ignition key in the ACC position. If the vehicle has an immobilizer system, disconnect the electrical connector from the immobilizer module, then slide the immobilizer module and the Ignition Lock Cylinder illumination ring as a single assembly. Use an awl or punch to depress the Ignition Lock Cylinder retaining pin and remove the Ignition Lock Cylinder from the housing by ensuring the lock cylinder is in the ACC position, inserting the awl or punch into the small hole in the housing, pushing it in to depress the retaining pin, and pulling out the Ignition Lock Cylinder. To install the lock cylinder, depress the retaining pin and guide it into the housing until the retaining pin extends back into the locating hole. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal. Remove the knee bolster panel and center trim panel. Using a trim tool, carefully pry the switch panel out from the instrument panel, then disconnect the electrical connector from the engine start switch and remove the switch from the back side of the panel, with installation being the reverse of removal.

The Ignition Lock Cylinder which provides the keyed interface that permits the driver to access electrical power and start the engine is located on the steering column. A device known as the Ignition Lock Cylinder accepts a cut key which aligns various tumblers so that the key can turn. When the key is turned to the start position, it activates the ignition switch to send current to the starter, ignition, and fuel injection circuits. By shifting the key back to on, the power supply to the engine and components resumes. However, when the key is in acc, the components power up without the engine running. Using a trim tool, carefully pry the switch panel out from the instrument panel, then disconnect the electrical connector from the engine start switch and remove the switch from the back side of the panel, with installation being the reverse of removal.
