Toyota MR2 Ignition Lock Cylinder
The Ignition Lock Cylinder on the Toyota MR2 allows you to start the engine and power on components. It does this by recognizing a coded key and using the turning of the mechanical key to activate the ignition switch in the column. Designed for a specific Toyota key, this Ignition Lock Cylinder has wafer tumblers that let the driver turn through the lock, acc, on, and start positions of the ignition. In lock, the MR2's steering column is secured and the key may be removed. The shift interlock prevents an automatic transmission from shifting out of park. When the Ignition Lock Cylinder is turned to acc, electrical power is supplied only to the components, which include the radio or windows. This position also enables MR2 components to work without engine power. When the Ignition Lock Cylinder is moved to the on position, it maintains power for engine operation and all electrical systems. When the Ignition Lock Cylinder is twisted to start, it sends current to the starter, ignition, and fuel injection circuits so that the Toyota engine cranks. The Ignition Lock Cylinder can wear out over time. It can cause the key to be difficult to turn. It can also cause an electrical loss that makes the MR2 engine stall or fail to start. - Q: How to check and replace the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on a Toyota MR2?A:The ignition switch and Ignition Lock Cylinder are located on the right side of the steering column assembly. To check them, locate the large plastic electrical connector next to the turn signal/hazard flasher/Dimmer Switch connector at the bottom of the steering column assembly; the ignition switch electrical connector is a large dark connector, while the warning buzzer connector is a small white one located beneath the forward end of the steering column assembly. The smaller connector activates the warning buzzer when the key is turned on. Use an ohmmeter to check the continuity between the indicated terminals of their electrical connectors; if the continuity of the ignition switch or the buzzer is not as specified, replace the ignition switch. For replacement, first remove the steering wheel, then take out the six screws from the lower steering column assembly cover half and remove both the upper and lower covers from the steering column assembly. Next, remove the lower dash panel, followed by the Ignition Lock Cylinder retaining screw, and then take out the Ignition Lock Cylinder. Installation is the reverse of removal.
