These models come equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), or airbag, that is intended to defend the driver and front seat passenger in a head-on crash. One module is installed in the steering wheel and another one in the instrument panel; some vehicles have sidewinders and curtain shield airbags for the side blow and a sensing/ diagnostic module is situated under the instrument panel. Subsequent generations could also have the seat belt pre-tensioners that reverses the seat belts before an accident. It is prohibited to take out the front seat belt retractor assemblies on the models of vehicles with pre-tensioners because possible problems may result in the turning on of SRS warning light. The steering wheel has the airbag inflator module that includes a cushion and inflator part and expands the airbag within nearly the least fraction of a second of acquiring the electrical signal. The passenger side airbag, which is in size slightly larger than the steering wheel unit, is locates above the glove compartment and is also fixed to the steel housing. The sensing and diagnostic module controls the power supply to the airbag system during an accident and tests the system at start-up, if it's working correctly it will turn on the "AIR BAG" light. If there is an issue with the car it will remain switched on or blinking and will therefore require service. Curtain shield air bags and side air bags are deployed in the side collisions through the center pillar mounted sensors. While operating in the vicinity of SRS components, the system has to be switched off by the ign rocker to LOCK position, removing the battery negative terminal and waiting for two minutes. There are always precautions to observing proper handling of airbag modules, ensure the opening is always pointing away from the body and airbag modules should never be placed with the top/bottom down. Do not attempt to measure the resistance of SRS components as this will deploy the airbag, and do not use any welding equipment on the car with airbags until the battery is disconnected. Dealership should be used for the disposal of live airbag modules.
