Toyota Solara Power Steering Pressure Switch

The Toyota Solara Power Steering Pressure Switch is a hydraulic watchdog that alerts for situations where steering effort is pushing the fluid pressures high. It alerts the engine computer so that idle speed bumps up and the engine does not stall while parking. The electronic power steering system features a Power Steering Pressure Switch in the pressure line coming from the pump. As it is located in a pressure line, it only closes its circuit when the flow control valves direct fluid back to the pump. This allows the electronic control unit to respond to a demand, rather than the driver experiencing a shudder. The early Toyota Solara models possessed conventional hydraulic assist and made use of a simple on-off Power Steering Pressure Switch. Later trims incorporated a form of variable assist steering but still retain the same two-wire concept, the only difference being that the ECU now blends the signal with speed and yaw inputs for smoothness. In every generation, the functionality of the Power Steering Pressure Switch is similar. It works in conjunction with the pump flow control valve to stop excessive assist at highway pace. Meanwhile, it assures fingertip steering in the parking lot. So far, there have been no other alternative styles for either the Toyota Solara coupe or convertible lines for switch replacement parts. Parts have identical thread size, identical voltage range, and identical pressure trip point throughout the line. One small Power Steering Pressure Switch helps keep steering easy and engines running.

Toyota Solara Power Steering Pressure Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Check and Replace the Power Steering Pressure Switch on a 2002-2008 Toyota Solara?
    A:
The Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch is located at the high pressure line outlet fitting of the Power Steering Pump. When steering system pressure reaches a high-pressure set point, the PSP switch closes and sends a signal to the PCM, which uses it to maintain engine idle speed during parking maneuvers. The operation of the PSP switch should be checked if the engine stalls during parking or idles continuously at high rpm. To perform the check, loosen the right front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel and the right front fender apron seal by taking out the three screws and the plastic inner seal from the fender well. Disconnect the PSP switch connector and connect an ohmmeter to the terminal and the switch body. Start the engine and let it idle, then turn the Steering Wheel to point the front wheels straight ahead and read the ohmmeter, which should indicate no continuity (infinite resistance). Next, turn the steering wheel to each side; the PSP switch should close as the wheel nears the steering stop on each side, and the meter should indicate continuity (zero ohms). If the switch fails either test, it should be replaced. To replace it, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and unscrew the switch from the fitting on the steering pump, removing the old O-ring and installing a new one. Finally, install and connect the new switch, lower the vehicle to the ground, bleed air from the power steering system, and add fluid as required.
