First of all, check the coolant level, drivebelt tension, and temperature gauge. If the engine warms up slowly or overheats without the upper radiator hose getting hot, the thermostat may be stuck open or closed respectively and needs replacement. Avoid driving without a thermostat. To replace the thermostat, detach the battery, drain the coolant, and undo the radiator hose and thermostat housing. For installation, make sure to secure the housing, reattach the hose, and check for leaks.
