Toyota T100 Starter Solenoid
The Starter Solenoid is the electrical gate that allows a small ignition signal to open the way for a high current surge to spin the starter motor or crank the engine over. When instructed to, the driver turns a key in a barrel which electrically connects to the battery and the Starter Solenoid. The Starter Solenoid receives a small current which causes it to snap closed heavy contacts that permit full battery power to be delivered to the starter. At the same time, the device pushes the pinion into the ring gear. The early versions of Toyota T100 trucks utilized an inertia Bendix drive that relied on the inertia of the pinion rather than an electric plunger. In contrast, more recent Toyota T100 models integrated a modern Starter Solenoid design. This upgrade afforded greater reliability with meshing as well as a one way clutch that protects the motor from overrun once the engine fires.
