The cooling fan in a vehicle is controlled by a temperature switch mounted on the thermostat cover. It is important to check the thermostat housing neck for any signs of damage and disconnect the coolant temperature switch electrical connector. If the fan does not operate, the fuses and fusible link should be checked first. To test the fan motor, the electrical connector should be unplugged and fused jumper wires should be used to connect the fan directly to the battery. If the fan still does not work, the motor should be replaced. If the motor is functioning properly, the issue may lie with the coolant temperature switch, relays, or wiring harness. The temperature switch can be tested by unplugging the connector and grounding it with the ignition switch on. If the fan operates, the switch is likely faulty. If the fan still does not operate, the relay and wiring should be checked. When replacing the main cooling fan, the battery cable should be disconnected and the vehicle should be securely supported on jack stands. The left splash pan and
Coolant Reservoir bottle should be removed, and the cooling fan assembly should be unbolted from the
Radiator and lifted out. The fan blade assembly should be detached from the motor shaft, and the fan motor should be removed from the mounting bracket. After reassembly, the coolant level and top radiator hose should be checked. For air-conditioned models, there is an additional condenser fan located in front of the
A/C Condenser. The battery cable should be disconnected, and the grill, electrical connector, and mounting bolts holding the fan assembly to the core support should be removed. The removal procedure is then reversed. The main relay and cooling fan relay should be checked for continuity at the indicated terminals using an ohmmeter. If continuity is not as specified, the relays should be replaced. The operation of the relays should also be checked using jumper wires and an ohmmeter. The condenser fan relay should be checked in a similar manner, and if continuity is not as specified, the relay should be replaced.
