Q:
How is the engine cooling fan controlled and how can it be troubleshooted and replaced? Posted by Customer
A:
The Cooling Fan Assembly is controlled by a temperature switch mounted on the thermostat cover or radiator. When the coolant reaches a certain temperature, the switch opens the ground return for the fan motor relay. To troubleshoot, first check the fuses. Then, test the fan motor by connecting it directly to the battery using fused jumper wires. If the fan still doesn't work, replace the motor. If the motor is fine, the issue may lie in the coolant temperature switch, relay, or wiring harness. Test the temperature switch by grounding the connector with the ignition switch on. If the fan still doesn't operate, check the relay or wiring. To replace the main Cooling Fan Assembly, disconnect the negative battery cable, raise the front of the vehicle, and remove the left splash pan. Drain the engine coolant and remove the engine relay box if necessary. On late model vehicles, remove the coolant reservoir. Remove the coolant reservoir hose and upper radiator hose from the radiator. Unplug the cooling fan connector and unbolt the fan shroud. Remove the nut and detach the fan blade assembly from the motor shaft. Take out the screws holding the fan motor to the bracket and detach the motor. Installation is the reverse of removal. For the auxiliary fan, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the radiator shroud if equipped. Remove the nut from the lower fan bracket. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the horn if necessary, and remove the remaining top and side fan retention bolts. Pull the fan free. Installation is the reverse of removal.
