Remove the
Starter Motor. For the gear reduction type, scribe or paint a mark across the starter motor and gear reduction assembly before disassembling. Disconnect the strap from the solenoid to the starter motor terminal by removing the nut. Remove the screws which secure the gear reduction assembly to the solenoid. Remove the through-bolts which secure the starter motor to the gear reduction assembly. Separate the motor from the gear reduction and solenoid assembly then remove the solenoid from the gear reduction assembly. Note the return spring protruding from the solenoid assembly - make sure that this spring is installed before reassembling the solenoid and the gear reduction assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to align the paint or scribe mark. For the direct type, remove the nut and disconnect the lead wire from the solenoid electrical terminal. Remove the two bolts from the solenoid and carefully unhook the solenoid and remove it from the starter assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal.
