Q:
What is the purpose and importance of inspecting the alternator and air conditioning compressor drivebelts? Posted by Customer
A:
The alternator and air conditioning compressor drivebelts, also known as V-ribbed belts or "fan" belts, are located at the right end of the engine and play a critical role in engine operation. These belts are susceptible to stretching and deterioration due to their composition and the high stresses they endure as they age, making periodic inspection necessary. The number of belts used depends on the vehicle's accessories, with one belt transmitting power from the crankshaft to the alternator and water pump, and an additional belt for the A/C compressor in air-conditioned vehicles. To inspect the belts, turn off the engine, open the hood, and use a flashlight to check for various signs of wear or damage, including separation of adhesive rubber from the core, core separation from the belt side, severed core, rib separation from adhesive rubber, rib cracking or separation, torn or worn ribs, or cracks in the inner ridges of the ribs. Ensure to inspect both sides of the belt by twisting it to examine the underside and use your fingers to feel any hidden areas. If any of these wear conditions are present, it's crucial to replace the belt. To check belt tension per factory specifications, a belt tension gauge like Nippondenso or Burroughs can be installed, or a rule of thumb method can be employed by pushing firmly on the belt midway between the pulleys and measuring the deflection with a ruler. The deflection should be 1/4-inch for pulley center distances between 7 and 11 inches and 1/2-inch for distances between 12 and 16 inches. Adjustments can be made by loosening the alternator adjustment bolt and pivoting the alternator for alternator belt adjustment or by turning the idler pulley adjuster bolt for air conditioning compressor belt adjustment. When replacing a belt, follow the adjustment procedures but remove the belt from the crankshaft pulley, and it's advisable to replace both belts simultaneously, marking each belt and its corresponding pulley groove for correct installation. Take the old belts to the parts store for comparison, and after replacement, ensure that the belt fits properly within the pulley's ribbed grooves and is correctly centered.
